What is ‘Unveiled Stories’?
‘Unveiled Stories’ is a blog series with the aim of unveiling the narrative of how personal relationship experiences shape and are shaped by culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) identities within the local Canberra community.
Through the Unveiled Stories series, CALD people can share their stories in their own voices, empowering the dialogue on interpersonal relationships and identities. ‘Unveiled Stories’ will be published on the Unveiled Institute’s blog.
Are you only accepting written work?
No, we will be accepting both written and non-written submissions. There are two broad categories of submissions we are accepting:
Category 1: Written submissions
Category 2: Other forms of submissions
What topics can I write/make art about?
We're looking for stories that discuss how CALD identities shape relationships, and how these relationships shape CALD identities. A few prompts are listed below to give you some ideas - but we want to hear from you, so let us know if you had something else in mind.
1. WOC Dating Stories
How has being a CALD woman affected your experiences of dating? Did your CALD upbringing affect your perceptions and behaviours in your romantic relationships? Have you got a dating story you’re dying to tell? Is it one of those outrageous stories that you always bring up at parties to make people laugh? Or is it one of heartbreak and growth? Whatever it is – we want to hear it!
2. Domestic Violence
What do you think domestic violence is? Have you noticed your perceptions of the topic change as you’ve been exposed to different experiences? Do you have a story you want to tell about your experiences with domestic violence?
3. Subtle Sexism or Racism?
Have you experienced subtle sexism/racism? How has subtle sexism/racism appeared to you? How does it make you feel receiving this treatment? Have you noticed yourself being guilty of internalised subtle sexism/racism?
Who are you? What do you feel like the world ought to know about you in order to actually know you? Your gender? Your culture? Your race? How do these different aspects of your identity intersect? How do they inform your values and belief system on topics like domestic violence?
5. Role Models
Who are your role models? Why do you admire them? Are they CALD women that you can identify with?
6. Hot topic: COVID-19
How has COVID-19 affected you? Have you noticed people treating you differently as a CALD person? How has it impacted your relationships? How has it impacted your health? Do you believe that COVID-19 has made CALD people and women more vulnerable, domestically and within the broader community?
